Heidi Health: Revolutionizing Healthcare with AI to Empower Doctors and Improve Patient Care

In a world where doctors often find themselves overwhelmed by the administrative burdens of their jobs, a new startup is providing a solution that promises to reshape the future of healthcare. Dr. Tom Kelly, a trauma surgeon, is all too familiar with the frustrations that come with medical practice—chief among them, the endless mountain of paperwork and administrative tasks that distract from patient care. Motivated by a vision to free doctors from these burdens, Dr. Kelly co-founded Heidi Health, a company that is now leading the charge in using AI to assist clinicians and transform the way healthcare is delivered.

The Genesis of Heidi Health

The seeds of Heidi Health were planted in 2021 when Dr. Kelly, driven by a desire for change, teamed up with Waleed Mussa, a former colleague from a previous startup. Together, they founded Heidi Health with a mission: to create an AI-powered tool that would help clinicians by automating the administrative work that eats up their time. By doing so, the goal was to empower healthcare providers to focus more on what they are truly passionate about—delivering high-quality care to their patients.

“The main idea behind Heidi was simple: we wanted to build an AI care partner that would stand alongside clinicians and take care of the admin so that individual providers, like me, could focus on providing the best possible care,” Dr. Kelly said in an interview with TechCrunch.

Transforming Healthcare with AI

Dr. Kelly and Mussa’s vision quickly gained traction. By early 2024, Heidi Health launched its first products to the healthcare market. The company’s flagship product is an AI medical scribe, designed to take the burden of documentation off clinicians’ shoulders. The tool uses advanced natural language processing (NLP) algorithms to transcribe and dictate patient notes, create personalized patient summaries, and even track tasks—eliminating the need for sticky notes and reducing the mental load on doctors.

Since its inception, Heidi Health has proven its potential for creating a profound impact. In just 18 months, the company has managed to save over 18 million hours for healthcare providers globally, across more than 70 million patient visits in 116 countries. This achievement highlights not only the scale of the company’s success but also the urgency of solving the problem of clinician burnout caused by administrative overload.

The AI Advantage: A Model-Agnostic Approach

One of the key innovations behind Heidi Health’s platform is its model-agnostic approach to AI. While the company developed its own proprietary AI model, it also integrates existing models, such as Google’s Gemini, to provide the most optimal balance between accuracy, latency, and cost. This flexibility allows Heidi Health to offer a solution that can adapt to the ever-evolving landscape of AI technology.

By using multiple AI models in tandem, Heidi Health has created a highly effective and cost-efficient product that clinicians can rely on. The company’s approach not only improves the accuracy of its services but also ensures that the tool works quickly enough to meet the fast-paced demands of healthcare environments.

A Strong Investment Round and Future Growth

The innovative technology behind Heidi Health caught the attention of prominent investors, leading to a $65 million Series B funding round in October 2024. The round was led by Point72, the investment firm headed by Steve Cohen. Other notable investors in this round included Goodwater Capital, Headline, Blackbird VC, LG Technology Ventures, and Alumni Ventures. With this latest injection of capital, Heidi Health has raised a total of $96.6 million to date.

This funding round also saw the addition of several industry veterans to the Heidi Health team. Notably, Dr. Simon Kos, the former Chief Medical Officer at Microsoft, and Paul Williamson, the head of revenue at Plaid, joined the company to help scale its operations and bring the technology to even more clinicians and healthcare organizations.

Empowering Doctors, Expanding Access to Care

Dr. Kelly’s goal extends beyond simply improving the efficiency of healthcare providers. He envisions a future where AI-powered tools like Heidi Health can help doctors practice medicine more effectively, regardless of their location or the resources available to them. For example, Heidi Health’s tools could empower healthcare providers in underserved regions, refugee camps, or even in war zones to increase their clinical capacity and provide quality care where it is most needed.

Dr. Kelly has made it clear that the future of healthcare should not be limited to the resources of developed countries. “Imagine a world where any healthcare provider in the world can use Heidi to increase their clinical capacity. Where they can practice in a war zone, or a refugee camp, or a region hit by climate change. Heidi can help them reach more patients and deliver better healthcare results,” he said.

A Free Version and Growing Customer Base

Heidi Health’s success can also be attributed to its innovative business model. The company offers a free version of its product, which allows healthcare providers to try out the platform before committing to any paid features. This strategy has proven to be highly effective in attracting new customers, as doctors can experience the product’s capabilities firsthand without any initial financial commitment.

As of now, Heidi Health supports over 2 million clinicians every week, from large hospitals to independent medical practices. This wide adoption speaks to the broad applicability and appeal of the platform, which serves healthcare providers of all sizes and specialties.

The Competitive Landscape

Heidi Health is not alone in the AI-powered medical scribe space. Companies like DeepScribe, Ambiance Healthcare, and Abridge also provide similar tools aimed at reducing the administrative burden on healthcare providers. However, Dr. Kelly and his team believe that Heidi Health stands out from its competitors due to its obsession with the user experience.

“They had seen all the scribes before,” Dr. Kelly remarked about the investors at Point72. “But they had never seen product adoption and usage metrics like they saw in Heidi. They also loved that we were obsessed about the end-user experience, because they saw most of our competitors were just doing top-down sales.”

The Human Element in Healthcare

Despite the rapid rise of AI in healthcare, Dr. Kelly is quick to emphasize that humanity remains essential to the medical profession. “AI is going to change everything in healthcare, but at its core, humanity is still very essential, especially when it comes to maintaining and building trust,” he said.

The true promise of AI, according to Dr. Kelly, lies in doubling the world’s healthcare capacity. He sees Heidi Health as a tool that can enable healthcare providers to focus on delivering the best care possible, free from the administrative drudgery that currently holds them back.

Looking Ahead: A Bright Future for Heidi Health

With a growing customer base, significant funding, and an expanding product suite, Heidi Health is well-positioned to continue its growth and revolutionize the way healthcare providers work. As the healthcare landscape continues to evolve, the company remains committed to its mission of using AI to reduce administrative burdens and expand healthcare capacity around the world.

As Heidi Health continues to expand its reach, it remains focused on the ultimate goal: to empower doctors, improve patient outcomes, and help increase the global capacity for quality healthcare.

In the coming years, the company’s innovative approach could become an integral part of the global healthcare system, improving not just the efficiency of individual practitioners, but also contributing to the broader movement of digital health transformation across the globe.

Heidi Health is truly at the forefront of healthcare innovation, and its impact is poised to be felt for many years to come.
