100-Year-Old Ruth Lemay Reveals Her Secret to Living a Long, Healthy Life

Living to 100 years old is a remarkable achievement in itself, but Ruth Lemay, a vibrant 100-year-old from Virginia Beach, has taken longevity to a whole new level. Recently, Ruth went viral after a video was posted on Instagram showing her pedaling away on a recumbent exercise bike at the gym. The clip, shared by the health brand evry.day club (@evrydayclub), quickly garnered attention, not only because of her impressive physical fitness but also because of her infectious energy and timeless positivity.

When asked what keeps her so active and youthful at 100, Lemay revealed the secret to her longevity: a combination of regular exercise, a nutritious diet, plenty of sleep, and a positive attitude. Her personal fitness routine has been a consistent part of her life, and she credits this as one of the main factors in maintaining her health.

Ruth Lemay’s Fitness Routine: How She Stays Active at 100

Ruth’s fitness routine is anything but casual. She regularly attends the gym three times a week with her 78-year-old daughter, where they each engage in their own workouts. The highlight of Lemay’s workout is her commitment to riding the recumbent bike. This type of bike is designed to provide support to the lower back while allowing for a full range of motion. Lemay spends two 30-minute sessions on the recumbent bike, covering roughly three miles each time.

But Lemay doesn’t stop there. After her bike session, she walks 1.4 miles and is currently working on reaching a 1.5-mile goal. On days when she can’t make it to the gym, she ensures she stays active by walking the length of her house multiple times, which amounts to 3.22 miles. She has even counted the number of steps she takes – a staggering 6,800 steps from one end of her house to the other!

For Ruth, exercise isn’t just about fitness; it’s a lifestyle she adopted early in life. “I’ve always exercised,” she says. “I feel fine. I might be a little bit tired after riding the bicycle and the walk, but that’s OK. I don’t expect not to feel tired.” Her commitment to staying physically active has been a constant throughout her life, whether at the gym or simply taking daily walks.

The Importance of Diet: Ruth’s Healthy Eating Habits

Aside from her rigorous exercise routine, Ruth credits her longevity to her diet, which is both nutritious and well-balanced. She has always been conscious of what she eats, and this focus on healthy food choices has remained a significant part of her daily life. “I love vegetables,” she says. “I grew up in the country, and my dad grew all kinds of vegetables, and they were wonderful for you.”

Ruth’s diet includes a variety of nutrient-dense foods. For breakfast, she typically enjoys non-fat yogurt, walnuts, oatmeal with banana and milk, or scrambled eggs with toast. For protein, Ruth relies on chicken, turkey, or seafood. She also enjoys a selection of fruits, including red grapes and blueberries, both of which are packed with antioxidants known for their anti-aging properties.

Her love for vegetables plays a large part in her meals, and it’s clear that she values the importance of incorporating plant-based foods into her diet. Lemay also avoids processed foods and maintains a low-fat, high-protein diet, which helps her stay in excellent physical shape.

The Role of Sleep and Rest in Longevity

Another factor in Ruth’s approach to longevity is her consistent sleep routine. According to Lemay, getting adequate rest is essential for maintaining both physical and mental health. She goes to bed at 9:30 every night, ensuring that she gets a solid amount of sleep each evening. Quality rest is essential for rejuvenating the body and mind, and Ruth’s commitment to a regular sleep schedule is a crucial element of her daily wellness.

Mental Health and Social Connections: The Keys to a Vibrant Life

While physical health is important, Ruth also emphasizes the significance of mental well-being. She has always placed value on maintaining a positive attitude and nurturing her mental health. Being socially engaged and having strong relationships has also been integral to her life. Ruth and her daughter share a close bond, and their regular trips to the gym provide not just physical benefits but also emotional support.

In an interview, Ruth’s daughter Annette Parker shared that her mother’s mental outlook has always been bright. “She’s always been very conscious of her diet,” said Annette, adding that Ruth’s commitment to healthy living and her positive mindset are key to her long and fulfilling life.

Ruth’s ability to maintain social connections is also a critical aspect of her longevity. Whether it’s with her daughter or friends, staying engaged in her community and maintaining meaningful relationships have kept her both mentally sharp and emotionally fulfilled.

Ruth’s Longevity: Genetics and Personal Choice

While genetics can play a role in longevity, Ruth points out that she doesn’t have family members who have lived as long as she has. Her mother passed away from colon cancer at the age of 65, and her father died from a heart condition at the age of 74. Despite these genetic factors, Ruth has managed to defy the odds and live an active, healthy life.

In addition to a heart valve replacement surgery, which she underwent years ago, Ruth has avoided major health complications, largely due to her focus on fitness, nutrition, and self-care. She has also been fortunate to avoid common age-related conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and arthritis, conditions that often affect older adults.

Ruth Lemay’s Words of Wisdom: A Blueprint for Aging Gracefully

Ruth’s lifestyle is a powerful testament to the impact of regular exercise, good nutrition, and mental well-being. Her focus on fitness has kept her active and vibrant well into her 100s, and her commitment to a healthy diet has ensured she remains strong and independent.

Her story is a reminder that living a long, healthy life isn’t just about the years we accumulate; it’s about how we take care of our bodies, minds, and relationships. While genetics may play a part, it’s clear that Ruth’s daily choices and positive attitude have made a significant impact on her longevity.

“I’m in pretty good health for my age,” Ruth proudly says, and with her unwavering spirit and disciplined lifestyle, she serves as an inspiration for all of us to live better, healthier, and more fulfilling lives.
